Whimsy Stamps ~ Fun with Hexagons ~ Part One
Hey crafty friends, I will be sharing some fun ideas using Whimsy Stamps Nested Hexagon Die Set this month. This is the first in my series of Hexagon themed cards. The first card in this series uses the largest two Hexagons from the Nested Hexagon Die Set. I think shaped cards are so fun and the card base for this is really easy to cut using a trimmer and the largest of the straight sided hexagons to trace the shape from. Make sure to leave the folded top uncut, so the card opens and closes easily. I designed mine with a 'top fold'. But you could easily rotate the design if you prefer a side fold card.
I diecut the scalloped frame from Simon Says Stamp Sunshine Cardstock. I also cut the Honeycomb Pattern Die from the same cardstock. I ink blended the areas on the left and right of centre with some Fossilized Amber Distress Oxide Ink and then added some small hexagon shapes using the Honeycomb Drips Stencil towards the lower left and top right of the white base panel also with Fossilized Amber Distress Oxide Ink. I cut the diecut Honeycomb Pattern into two about the middle, and positioned these towards the top left and bottom right of the white panel and adhered them with liquid glue.
I stamped the sentiments from the cute Hap-Bee Birthday Clear Stamp set, in VersaFine Clair Nocturne Ink, which gives a good crisp stamped impression. I used a shaker dome from Pear Blossom Press to add that fun shaker element to the centre of the card. I used the Scallop Circle Frames Die Set to cut a small circle base the right size for the shaker dome. I cut one layer from white, and ink blended the centre for a bit of colour in the shaker well. I cut a second layer from Sunshine Cardstock which I trimmed the middle out of to fit over the shaker dome and to add a round layer to cover where the dome adheres to the cardstock to completely obscure the shaker dome edge. This gave a tidy finish to that element.
I had to experiment with circle dies in my stash to find the right fit. The scalloped dies in this set were either too big or too small to add the scalloped element, so I pulled out my Happy Sayings Die Set and used the little scalloped circle from that, trimming out the middle and fitting it over the dome to complete the embellishing of the dome. I adhered the shaker element with thin foam pads, so it would sit over the honeycomb diecut evenly.
Before adding those trims to the shaker dome, I filled it with the offcut tiny hexagons which were waste from diecutting the Honeycomb Pattern. I used some flower sequins from the Confetti Mix - Flowers and Fish?, some orange glass seed beads from Prima and some confetti style sequins from two different sets. I'll link all these elements below for quick reference. They make a fun shakey sound mixed together, great fun for kids! The final element was to add the two little bees from the Hap-Bee Birthday Clear Stamp Set. I coloured them with my Copic Markers and added a touch of blue shimmer pen to their wings for some subtle sparkle and some white gel pen accents here and there. I adhered them to the card base with foam to pop them up for a bit of dimension and interest. I paired this card with a 5 and 3/4 inch square envelope, which was a good fit for the extra dimension the shaker dome adds. This would need some padding if being posted and likely a little extra on the postage. But I'll be hand delivering this, so no issue there.
