Whimsy Stamps ~ Candy Corn Poetry Book
Hey crafty friends, I have a cute make to share with you today. Some of you may recall last year a little stamp set that was made by Whimsy Stamps with a poem I wrote. It was given away as an incentive stamp set last year with purchases during our Halloween season. I absolutely loved what they did with that poem. The layout Deb Davis gave it was so lovely with little bats around it. She and I were talking at the time about my poems, as I have several and she suggested I should write a children's book. I just laughed it off, but the idea lived rent free in my brain all year! So when the August 1st Quick Cards set came out, an idea blossomed to make a little book with my poems and these adorable Quick Card characters. The result is what I'm sharing with you today, a one off, unique book of poetry with these fantastic Quick Card Fronts as the illustrations. I hope you enjoy seeing it.
I've used the Primitive Candy Corn Die Set to create this mini book. I cut a black page for the front and back of the book from Spellbinders Brushed Black Cardstock from their Sealed Collection. This is a lovely cardstock with a subtle shimmer to it. I diecut the Primitive Candy Corn layers out of white cardstock which I coloured with Distress Oxide Inks in Squeezed Lemonade for the base layer and Carved Pumpkin for the middle layer to emulate candy corn colours. The white top layer, I initially diecut from the same white cardstock, but it looked a little flat, so I diecut it from a lovely shimmery white cardstock called Brushed Pearl from the Sizzix Opulent Cardstock Pack in Ivory from their Surfacez Collection. This pack has 50 sheets of specialty cardstock and they are all gorgeous. So this added a little touch of luxury to the title page. I stamped the title which reads 'One of a Kind Weird-o' from Whimsy's So Weird Stamp Set. I then stamped one of the smaller kitty's from Whimsy's Got Peepers Stamp Set and I diecut the flying witch from the Roaming Monsters Die Set and added that near the top. The witch was a later addition. I thought since the book contained poems about several little witches, I would add the smaller flying one to the cover to complete that idea. I'll show a pic later with that version.
Here are the main pages of my little book. Each with a sweet scene or character. The poem is on the facing page and I've stamped some elements on those pages with VersaFine Morning Mist Ink. I didn't want those to overshadow the main illustrations, so chose a grey ink to stamp them in rather than black. The poetry was printed with a slight curve to it, to better fit the shape of the Primitive Candy Corn die set. Hubby was very instrumental in helping me with this process.
I have decorated each page to work with the story I'm telling through the poems. They don't run together as one full story, rather a collection of poems, each about a special central character, which is depicted in the poem and accompanying illustrations. To hear the poems, you'll need to watch my video. I read it at the end of the video in full. I had such fun bringing this little book of poems to life and rather love how it turned out! There is a moral to the collection of poems too, something my childhood stories read by my parents often contained and I liked including that here.
I could go on and on about the elements I used for this creation, but I'll list them below and encourage you to have a look at the video which has more information. You can see the stamp sets used for the poem page stamping in the image above and I've use a mix of die sets to embellish the Quick Card Front pages. The tiny pumpkins from Trixie's pumpkin patch are a favourite feature for me on this make and I've used a mix of Distress Spray Stains and Distress Mica Spray Stains to create those lovely Autumnal hues. The tiny dies are part of the Build-A-Pumpkin-Patch Die Set from Whimsy Stamps. All the stamps and dies are from Whimsy Stamps. I punched each page with my Crop-A-Dile punch as I needed the holes a little rounded, which the Cinch didn't do and I only wanted 3 holes. But I measured the distance, so I could still use a Cinch Wire to bind the book and used my Cinch machine for this process. I was really fortunate to pick up this machine in an incredible sale, so love when I can pull it out for a play!
Thank you for popping in to visit today friends, I hope you've enjoyed seeing this slightly different make from my usual and I hope you enjoy this slightly different approach to these elements. I've had such fun creating this sweet Halloween Poetry Book and I will of course be back with another Halloween adventure very soon! Until then, I wish you a magical week. Hugs, Wends xoxo
