Whimsy Stamps ~ Halloween Pendant

Hey crafty friends, I have an ‘off the page’ creation, which I have made to finish off my Halloween costume. It was such fun to create and I absolutely love the way it turned out!

I started with the fabulous Forever Cameo Frames Die Set from Whimsy Stamps and diecut the frilliest frame in heavyweight black cardstock from Gina K Designs. I then took some gold ink from Honey Bee and ran this along the edges for a gilded finish. Honey Bee suggests heat setting their gold ink for the best finish. So I did so.

I chose a gorgeous page from the Haunted Houses Paper Pack and laid the diecut frame over the page to choose the area to crop. I used a pencil to trace the outside edge of the frame centre, running it along the open edges, to get a vague outline of where to cut the patterned paper. Not the very frilly outer edge, but the more oval frame just out from the very centre oval. There were enough gaps to get a good idea where to cut the patterned paper.

Once I’d trimmed the patterned paper to size, I adhered it behind the frame and trimmed away any overflow pieces which showed through the frilly frame. I made sure I was as careful as possible with the remainder of the paper, so I could use it again for another project. Next I added a little diecut ‘familiar’ from the Witch Whispers Sister Die Set. I cut this twice, once from silver cardstock and once from black. I layered the black diecut over the silver, so there is a little moonlit sliver on the kitty and adhered the kitty to the patterned paper, choosing where I wanted him to sit within the scene. I allowed the glue to dry completely before moving to the next phase.

I used Nuvo Clear Crystal Drops to add a glaze over the whole scene. It starts off quite milky as you’re applying it. My best advice to avoid air bubbles when applying glaze, is to move slowly and methodically with the nozzle across and down the design until the whole scene is filled in, gently squeezing to give a constant flow of glaze. I took a pin from one of my glue bottles and carefully cleaned up the sides of the frame where some glaze had spilled over. This can happen and it’s important to clean it up carefully before the glaze sets. You can also clear any air bubbles from within the glaze should any be visible. Carefully just pierce the glaze with the pin and move slowly and carefully in a small circle to get all the air out and lift the pin out slowly allowing the glaze to settle and seal again, so no marks are left. It’s important to allow the glaze to dry fully overnight. Let it rest on a surface that allows a bit of air flow so the back can dry. I propped mine up on a glue dots dispenser reel, but a reel of washi tape would work well too as long as it’s well supported.

I completed this design by threading some black waxed cord through the open top of the frilly frame and adding a jewellery clasp for easy closure. You could just use some organza ribbon and tie it at the neck to close. Velvet ribbon would also be really pretty! There are three frame shapes in the Cameo Frames Die Set, so it would be fun to experiment with the other frames in the set, but I felt this frilliest frame was perfect for this ‘off the page’ design. I hope you had fun seeing my 'off the page' crafty adventure. I have shared a downloadable tutorial for this design in the Whimsy Stamps Facebook Group if you'd like a copy.

There are only 10 days until Halloween, can you believe it? We would love it so much if you joined our World Cardmaking Day Celebration and this cutie sitting on her moon is the sweet image being given away by Whimsy for this event. It runs until October 31st. So come snag your copy from the Whimsy Stamps Facebook Group, we'd love to see what you're inspired to do with her! I will be back again soon with another crafty adventure. Have fun in the countdown to Halloween. Hugs and happy crafting, Wends xoxo
