Whimsy Stamps ~ What's That Coming Over The Hill?

Hey crafty friends. Creating this card, I was totally singing Monster from The Automatic, totally captures the vibe of this fun make and of course I had to do a reel that captured this, because the beautiful Mica Shine does not show well in the stills!

This was a real mix of elements used for this make. I stamped Frank and Vlad from the Handmade Monsters Stamp Set, which was a real trick to get them to stamp over the Mica. VersaFine Clair which is my usual 'go to' for this type of silhouette stamping just would not lay down over the Mica, so I ended up using Black Archival Ink which worked better, but not perfectly, so I added some clear embossing powder over top to get the black to retain its deep black colour over the Mica. This worked well and ensured the ink stayed put. Very helpful to have this in the MISTI to be able to stamp in the same place over and over.

The fleeing villagers are from a little die set called Running Scared. I diecut those from black cardstock and ran a little Nuvo Gold shimmer pen along the front of each one to suggest their lanterns were illuminating them. It's a subtle touch, better seen up close. The little lanterns have glow in the dark centres as does the eye on the wolf, he comes from the Monster Parade Die Set. The Glow in the Dark elements are a fun unexpected touch, when the lights go out. I didn't have the room quite dark enough for the full effect in the pic above, but you can still get the idea. I popped up on black foam circles the wolf and one of the villagers for a little depth and dimension.

I created the background in Stacy Hutchinson style, masking the moon and then spritzing the moon to allow the mica to bleed into the moon, creating a spooky haze. I absolutely love the way she creates these spooky moons and I've enjoyed Amy Rysavy's creations done this way too. Amy has several videos showing this technique and they're all SO good. If you've not watched her creating, I encourage you to. Amy has years of creative experience and she's very good at sharing her tips and tricks along the way. After creating my Mica Background with the spooky moon, I used Distress Black Opaque Paste to add the spooky trees with Whimsy's brand new Halloween Trees and Grasses - 6x9 Stencil. This has such fun spooky trees and long grasses on it. I know I'll be using this again very soon!

I captured these shots of the trees right after adding them to the panel and the mica showed up so nicely on these, I thought I'd share these with you too, to show the lovely play of mica on this panel. Shifted in the light, this is a shiny, shimmery, eery make and I love how it all came together. I did add a few spritzes of the new Wilted Violet Distress Spritz too and love how this played with the Micas. They are not the same in colour or behaviour. So fun! The final touch was adding the Goosebumps Sentiment, which I chose to add in an off white shade, as there was so much black on this make already and it gave this piece a nice prominent 'title'. I'm pretty sure I'd have goosebumps with those fellas chasing me too!
