Whimsy Stamps ~ Witchy Woman

Hey crafty friends, I'm back with a make I had the absolute best time creating. I saw a tutorial some time back by a very talented crafter from Inkylicious called Debbie. This tutorial stayed with me and I kept thinking about it as I saw new product come into our Halloween Range at Whimsy Stamps. I didn't have the stencil necessary to do the technique, but was so keen to give it a go, I went through my stash and worked out how!

So the first thing I needed to do was to create a stencil to do the window aperture. I had the gorgeous Stained Glass Window Die Set in my stash, so I pulled those out and worked out what size I needed to create the aperture. I decided on the second largest in the set. Then I pulled out my alcohol ink paper, which in this case was some Grafix Opaque Craft Plastic in White. I had the 9 x 12" size and it occurred to me this plastic finish paper could work really well as a stencil and boy oh boy was I right!

The plastic was a bit 'hairy' after cutting, but I just ran my sand eraser along the edge to remove those, so they wouldn't impact the ink blending, I don't actually think it would make a big difference, but it was good to do.

I got very inky creating this card. I traced out the shape of the frame, then offset the frame to create the little ledge. My tracing wasn't perfect, my pen skipped a couple of times, but I just ran with it. Next I pulled out my clouds stencil from Whimsy to create the orange sky. I also used a little moon stencil to create the moon and craters. 

Next I added some foliage off to the side to add a little interest to the background. My stamp was too far over in my MISTI, so I ended up getting a smudgy finish, but again, I just ran with it, I was playing, having fun, trying out new things, so I didn't overthink it. 

After the solid ink blending around the aperture, I grabbed the giraffe stencil from Whimsy to create a cobblestone wall effect, I used Hickory Smoke and Lost Shadow to stencil the top left and bottom right of the aperture, I swapped to black soot to do the remaining areas, just to give a sense of light and shadow in the room. I added some black diecut mini jacks, so the room didn't feel empty and also added the lovely Enchanted word die.

I then added my witch and her familiars, which at the last minute I decided needed shadows and boy am I glad I added that detail. I think it's really grounding. I wanted my witch to have a shine down her front, to suggest a glow from her Moonstone that she's charging in the moonlight. I ran a glue pen along her borders and then added some iridescent glitter embossing powder for that little touch of sparkle.

I toyed with the idea of adding a little flying witch across the moon which Whimsy released for this Halloween season as part of a set of silhouette shapes, but I didn't want her competing with my main image, so opted to add a few bats which I took from a clear stamp set from Whimsy. Their sets are often full of extra fabulous companion images, not just the main ones and I have found these so brilliant for completing Halloween scenes.
